December 29,1993/50 cents It’s certain: our'93 tax is due now By Terry Pope County Editor Three lines will greet persons at the Brunswick County Tax Department next week - for payments, appeals and listings. The last day to pay 1993 county taxes without penalty is Wednesday, January 5. "The lines are steady, but they're not out the door," said Boyd Williamson, Brunswick County tax administrator, on Tuesday. "I don't know what they will do next week." The office will also begin listing personal property taxes Monday and continue with revaluation appeals through the middle of January. The office will mail approximately 17,000listing forms for personal prop erty this week. They will show boats, farm equipment and mobile homes not covered under permanent listings. Real estate - homes and land - are now automatic and do not have to be listed each year. Staggered renewals for cars and trucks have also cut down on annual mailings from the tax office. Those bills are mailed following registra tion renewal. Lines usually form the first week of January for persons who pay their , _ taxes at the last moment. "If the years past are any indica tion." said Williamson, "they should move fairly quickly.” It is someone's responsibility to list personal property not covered under real estate and automobile listings. "We can't keep up with all of the See Taxes, page 6 Holiday closings Some government offices will be taking Monday, January 3, off to cel ebrate the New Year, while others will just be going back to work after a long break. Area banks will be open until 6 p.m. Friday, December 31, but will be closed on Monday. Yaupon Beach ToWn Hall also will be closed Monday. Southport, Long Beach, Caswell Beach, Boiling Spring Lakes and Brunswick County gov ernment offices will be closed Friday, December 31. The BrunswickCounty Library will be closed Friday, December 31, and Saturday, January 1. The post office will close at noon on New Year's Eve and also be closed on Saturday. Brunswick County schools and Brunswick Community College will reopen on Monday. School board seeking $10,000 Jones says he'll fight lawsuit over cafeteria equipment sale By Holly Edwards Municipal Editor Jones' Seafood Restaurant owner Jarvis Jones said this week he intends to fight a lawsuit filed against him by the Brunswick County school system seeking either a mini mum of $10,000 in compensation for cafeteria equipment he purchased in J uly, or the safe return of all the equipment to the school warehouse. On July 20, Jones purchased 46 pieces of cafeteria equipment removed from Southport Elementary School for $350, and later the same day sold 12 pieces of equip ment to Ed's Carolina Restaurant Equipment store in Wilmington, owned by Jones' nephew Ed Jones, for $7,800. School attorney Glen Peterson said he will attempt to locate the remaining 34 pieces of equipment during the discovery phase of the lawsuit. The sale was made to Jones by child nutrition director Rebecca Brandon, allegedly without the school board's authorization. State law requires the school board to See Jones, page 7 State review Agencies load quarry project with questions By Terry Pope County Editor A regional director recommends a mining permit be denied to Martin Marietta for a proposed rock quarry north of Southport, but state officials say they need more data before a final decision is made. The N. C. Department of Environ ment. Health and Natural Resources (DEHNR) has completed its initial review of the permit application. Martin Marietta must respond to a lengthy list of concerns raised by state agencies, three of which support de nial. The company wants to mine for limestone on a 1,000-acre tract north of Bethel Church Road. Otheragencieseither asked for more information or listed concerns for the proposed quarry while none has sug gested approval. The state responded a week ahead of the December 29 deadline, and a decision now could take time. "My best guess is that it's a year off." said John Harvey, county plan ning director who serves as county facilitator for the state review. Requests for more information, it denial is inevitable, "would constitute a waste of time, money and resources' for both the state and the company, he See Quarry, page 5 Bald Head facing most important of its growing years By Jim Harper Staff Writer The year ahead for Bald Head Is land stacks up as the most important in that young village's history, and manager Wallace Martin says he wants to be around for the full term. Hired as the village's first adminis trator in 1986. Martin has discussed retiring in the past and presently is serving what many thought would be his last year, but on Tuesday he said he'd "like to stay for another year.’' That's another year beginning in July, his employment anniversary. Martin's remark came in a discus sion of what the village can look for ward to in the next 12 months. Major policy changes are possible - - including an alteration in how the village council is selected and whether the council chooses to make building rules more stringent than in other com munities. And major fiscal concerns are1 ikely to arise. Martin says. "There have to be some decisions made about purchasing propern for a garbage disposal center." he said. "A committee has been appointed ( vil lage councilmen Bill Leineweber and Sam Bell, and Martin) and we'll have a report in February, and that s going to be a dollar figure that will impact our budget." Martin said that another necessary capital improvement is roadwork on South Bald Head Wynd.
